NUUG Oslo meetings: Information for speakers

The goal of the NUUG Oslo meetings is to create a environment where users, developers and administrators of Unix-like operating systems meet and get to know each other, and learn new and interesting aspects of Unix, open source and free software.

  • Location: Teknologihuset, Pilestredet 56. Time: Tuesdays 18:30, once a month on the second tuesday of the month

The meetings are informal, and there are normally 5-20 listeners.

The presentation is expected to last about 60 minutes, including time for questioning. The speaker should meet at least 15 minutes up front to allow time to test and fix problems with the projector.

The language to be used is norwegian or english. The lecturer choose the language to use.

We use the lecture rooms in the 3rd floor, there is a video projector. There is no computer available. TP network is available.

We need information on the presentation approximately 14 days before the presentation, to allow us to announce it properly. We need the title of the presentation, a short summary (~1-2 paragraphs) of the presentation, and one paragraph describing the speaker.

If possible, we would like the presentation slides in Postscript or PDF format after the presentation to make it available on our web site.

The presentation will be video recorded for publishing with the license Creative Commons Navngivelse-Del på samme vilkår 3.0 Norge.

Huskeliste for foredragsholdere (av Mark Burgess)

  1. Husk at du lager et foredrag til et publikum. Et publikum setter pris på foredragsholdere som er konsise, forberedt og som holder tiden.
  2. Kom så lang tid i forveien at du er klar til å begynne med foredraget på rett tid -- med alle tester og forberedelser ferdig på forhånd! Det er dårlig å måtte vente på løsning av tekniske problemer, eller uforberedte forelesere.
  3. Et foredrag bør vare ca. 45 minutter. Bruker du slide fremviser, regn med 10-12 slides (det tar 3-4 minutter per slide). Tar det lengre tid - dveler du for mye. Hold ting i gang.
  4. Den viktigste delen av et foredrag er åpningen. Planlegg åpningen spesielt for å fenge interessen. Det er ingenting verre enn en sløv start.
  5. Unngå å snakke for mye om detaljer -- folk flest vil ha en oversikt. Hvis du må demonstrere noe -- pass på at alt virker problemfritt i forveien.
  6. Et godt foredrag er en blanding av underholdning og informasjon. Mange prøver å presentere for mye informasjon. Gi heller gode referanser.
  7. Hvis du bruker bærbar PC for å vise presentasjon, påse å ikke bruke for høy oppløsning -- da vil ikke projektøren klare å vise bildet på storskjerm. Du bør ikke overskride ca. 1024x800 i et naturlig frekvensområde.

Checklist for speakers (by Mark Burgess, translation Cato Auestad)

  1. Keep in mind that you are making a presentation for an audience. The audience appreciate if the speakers is concise, prepared and keep track of the time.
  2. Meet up a good time in advance so that you are ready to present your talk on time -- with all the appropriate tests and preparations done beforehand! It's pretty sad to wait on solutions to technical issues or unprepared speakers.
  3. The presentation should last approx. 45 minutes. If you use slides, then 10-12 slides should be sufficient (3-4 minutes per slide).
  4. The most important part of the presentationn is the opening. Put extra effort into planning the opening, as this will be the thing that'll keep people interested in the subject. There is nothing worse than a slow start.
  5. Try not to talk too much in details, most people want a overview. If you need to demonstrate anything, make sure it works flawlessly beforehand.
  6. A good presentation is a mixture of entertainment and information. Alot of people try to present too much information. We'd rather you give good refrences than overload the information in the presentation.
  7. If you use a laptop to display the presentation, do not use too large resolution since the projector can only show so much on the screen. You should not max 1024x800 in a normal frequency area.
